Biogas is an flammable gas produced by the fermentation of any kind of biomass. It is produced in biogas plants for which both waste and renewable resources are fermented. The prefix Bio refers to the “biotic” method of formation in contrast to fossil natural gas, not to an origin from organic farming. The gas can be used to generate electrical energy, to operate vehicles or to feed into a gas supply network. For the utilization of biogas, the methane content is most important, since its combustion releases energy.
